Alta Via della Grande Guerra,
Trails and Nature on the Path of History
THE PROJECT
The Alta Via della Grande Guerra is a 200 km hiking trail, an open-air museum that winds through the Vicentine Pre-Alps, narrating the legacy of World War I. Established in 2001 with funding from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and in collaboration with the Province of Vicenza, the Spettabile Reggenza dei Sette Comuni Mountain Union, the Veneto Region, and 24 municipalities, the project has enhanced and connected historical sites from a painful past.
This route is not just a journey through nature but a commemorative experience that guides visitors through fortifications, trenches, war cemeteries, and military posts. Here, nature preserves the traces of history, inviting future generations to recognise and honour its significance.
The four military memorials of Pasubio, Cimone, Asiago, and Grappa, symbols of the Province of Vicenza, form the heart of this journey, housing the remains of thousands of fallen soldiers. They serve as a profound invitation to reflect on freedom and the sacrifice of those who fought for a peaceful future.
The Alta Via della Grande Guerra offers over 200 kilometers of trails leading to sites of significant historical and cultural value, including the structures of the Great War Ecomuseum, memorials, museums, visitor centers, and Italian and Austro-Hungarian fortifications. This project stands as a testament to the commitment of institutions, municipalities, and associations to preserve collective memory—a reminder against forgetting the weight of war and a tribute to the importance of peace.

THE ROLE OF ALDA+
ALDA+ plays a key role in the Alta Via della Grande Guerra (AVGG) project, managing communication, planning, promotion, and event organisation. Among its major initiatives are 12 guided excursions led by historical and environmental experts along the AVGG trail. These excursions have allowed participants to explore World War I sites while appreciating the natural beauty of the region, fostering an active remembrance of history.
ALDA+ is responsible for producing brochures and maps available for download from the official website, as well as printed information points distributed to municipal administrations and tourist offices. The project is promoted through participatory meetings with local authorities and collaborations with specialized magazines, such as the Touring Club Italiano, which help spread the initiative through dedicated articles. These activities aim to enhance the historical and natural heritage of the AVGG, strengthening the connection between memory and territory.
